(KJV) Though the interesting stuff starts after around v.16 sin-wise it is worth looking in particular at verses 6 and 7. The Father, Word and Holy Ghost bare record in 'heaven'. (read - "The Gospel") And three bare witness to that same gospel in earth (you could read that as "daily life" if you wish) To the gospel, which is the witness of God in his will, - His spoken word, and the truth of the kingdom of God through the Holy Spirit by Christ - it is these that witness to the truth of the gospel, not by persuasion but by the record that is handed down to us. Originally by spoken word of believers cf v.6 and v.10. On the other hand, three witness in our lives - the Spirit, water and blood. These three "agree in one". Which one? well, the "witness of God" written of in v.9 of course! The Roman and hellenic world had many saviour cults and messiah men-gods.. leading up to the apparatus of the state declaring the emperor-god we are so familiar with (when we think of roman persecution for non-compliance.) Each of these cults through manipulation of superstition and ritual proposed their own methods of salvation, but many were like the cults and lodges some of us would have heard about today - and often charged much in fees for advancement through initiations or gnosic superstition. The Spirit, which is the truth of the gospel witnessed in our acceptance - our faith and sound doctrine of the gospel - (see below), the water - (our repentance and the ability to overcome our sinful nature with joy - see preceding section "New Testament in Christ") and the blood, the method of salvation by the cross and shed blood of Jesus Christ. Only these three convincingly and evidentially (truthfully) occur in Christianity, which was the reason for it's smash-hit success that defeated the mediterranean empire states and rolled Rome's capitulation like thunder across continents. RE: The note on the Spirit above, it is worth recalling that the Jewish authorities were astounded by the witness of Peter and John, and more so that they were "unlearned" men. The Gospel's native truth can appeal on so many levels to educated nobility, illiterate slaves, professors and traffic wardens - It's great success is the ability to communicate truth to the listener beyond the ability of the speaker, without parsing hidden meaning revealed to only "the few" but freely unlockable to anyone with the inclination to consider it. On to the section of the text concerning sin.(verses 16 onwards). John here is not differentiating between sins that are not unto death being preferable to those that are unto death - grievous sin. John was writing on the subject of love for ones brethren in Christ, and in the letter had written of antichrists that were not to be counted amoung the brethren. Specifically he was teaching on how to recognise these antichrists, that they had the "spirit of error". John differentiates here between praying for belivers, and praying for antichrists. He affirms "I do not say he should pray for it". being, do not use prayer for an antichrist to stop sinning. Members of the church that are antichrist require repentance, or rather complete rejection rather than correction. Denying that Jesus is come in the flesh (resurrected and victorious) is not a property of the faith of a christian. Likewise, there is no reason not to pray for a brother who has sinned. Praying for tares when they reject and deny Christ is the Son of God is not "loving your brother". The new testament repeatedly teaches that christians should avoid such people, who come to them and try to compromise the sanctity of the body of Christ.
